family

Kalym or kalyn, (from Turkic “qalım” – “bride fee”) – fee; the ransom paid originally to the clan, later to the parents or relatives of the bride; work-out for the bride can be regarded as a variety of kalym. Kalym, along with dowry, was a contribution of two clans to the formation of the future family’s common property. During the Soviet period, it was criticized as a relic.
