A polygamous family is a family consisting of more than two partners. Traditionally polygamy (polygyny) – a form of marriage, when one man was simultaneously married to several women – was allowed in Central Asia. Moreover, this marriage is concluded with each of the women individually. The Soviet Marriage Code prohibited polygamy. The prohibition of polygamy is also reflected in the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Today, this type of marriage performed under religious rites still remains but it is illegal and is prosecuted by law.
A monogamous family consists of two partners. The vast majority of families in Uzbekistan are monogamous.
